Officials in Los Angeles are seeking urgent help from the public to apprehend a suspect believed to be targeting the homeless community. This week, three unhoused individuals were tragically shot and killed in their sleep. The first incident occurred in an alley on Sunday around 3 a.m., followed by a second killing on Monday just before 5 a.m., and a third on Wednesday around 2:30 a.m. During a news conference, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore revealed that the victims consisted of two Hispanic men aged 37 and 52, as well as a 62-year-old Black man.
Chief Moore emphasized the vulnerability of the homeless population, stating that these individuals are among the most susceptible. All three killings occurred under similar circumstances, with the victims believed to have been alone and asleep during the attacks. Disturbingly, the incidents took place in different parts of the city, including an area known as Skid Row, which is densely populated by homeless individuals. The chief shared that in each case, a lone assailant approached the sleeping victims, opened fire, and calmly walked away.
Mayor Karen Bass issued a warning, urging people not to sleep alone and urging family members to reach out to their loved ones living on the streets. Seeking shelter, services, and support is crucial. The mayor expressed deep sadness over the news, highlighting that the city is home to a significant unhoused population and emphasizing that this killer is specifically targeting them.
Mayor Bass acknowledged the dangerous conditions faced by the homeless community on a daily basis, with four to five unhoused people dying every day due to various causes, including violence. In response, the city has directed its office of homelessness and housing solutions to mobilize outreach teams throughout Los Angeles to encourage seeking shelter.
The Los Angeles Police Department has formed a task force consisting of homicide investigators from across the city to collaborate on this case. Alongside them, the agency's forensic science division will thoroughly process and analyze all evidence to identify any possible suspects. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón affirmed that his office is working closely with law enforcement to uncover the identity of this potential serial killer preying on the most vulnerable members of the community.
